Hip hop was a new style of music that ushered in the 70′s and brought a smile to the listener’s face and made you nod your head. Thus hip hop was introduced into the music industry and got commercialized. ‘Waterfalls’ an all time favorite composed by TLC got popular the world over and entered the hip hop music charts in 1995. This single was at the summit of the hip hop music charts for several weeks. Waterfalls depicted the culture of modern day; it created awareness of the issues faced by young people such as drugs, guns, aids and crimes that young people are susceptible to. The song tried to help overcome these problems. ‘Changes’ was another popular song that portrayed the lives of the poor and urged people to bring change. This song is filled with passion, great beats and has some good instrumental melody. Some of the hip hop songs that are believed to be the best on the basis of the popularity and the impact they created are: the ‘Beastie Boys – Fight for your right’ composed in the year 1986 from the album ‘Licensed to ill’. This song reached number seven in the hip hop music chart. Another hip hop song that got global recognition was ‘Paid in Full’. This song was appreciated even by non hip hop fans for its smooth rhymes and sophisticated verses and it occupied the number eight position on the R and B hip hot music charts. The other popular hip hop songs that have entered the hip hop music charts because of good music and instrumental beats are ‘Creep’, ‘California Love’, ‘Touch the Sky’ etc. Popular hip hop songs reach a wider audience and its lyrics touch the lives of people in such a way that it changes their perception.
